The records show that John Benett-Dampier was killed on 2nd March, 1915 while attached to the Sherwood Foresters from the 2nd Cheshire battalion but there is no indication as to which of the two regular battalions of the Sherwood Foresters, then on the Western Front, he was attached. He is buried in a cemetery in Belgium but both the 1st and the 2nd battalions of the Sherwood Foresters were further south in France at that time. Four territorial battalions of the regiment had arrived in France at the end of February, 1915 and he may have been attached to one of them.
